Two great posts

If you haven’t already, check out these two posts from two great bloggers:

  • Billy Dennis reveals another possible Democratic candidate to run in the 18th Congressional race. You may not have seen her before, but I’m sure you’ve heard her if you’ve been around Peoria for awhile and ever listened to an agricultural report on WMBD.
  • PeoriaIllinoisan reviews coverage of the trail-advocates’ pep rally yesterday. I’m glad I’m not the only one that was annoyed by WEEK constantly calling it the “old Kellar Branch line.”

    Food for thought:

There are several area railroad lines which are older than the Kellar Branch (1871). These are Iowa Interstate’s Bureau – Peoria Branch (1854), BNSF’s Galesburg – Peoria Branch (1857), the Keokuk Junction Railway’s Keokuk – La Harpe – Hollis mainline (1868), and a portion of Canadian National’s Pekin – Mattoon line (1870).

What the these media types do not understand is that the original track materials – rail, ties, ballast, etc. – have been replaced since initial construction. Thus, “old” is misleading.

  • The Mouse

David, media types you say “do not understand”, do, in fact, understand that using the word “old” carries a connotation with it (ie. “worn out”). They very well understand what they’re doing and they intent to do it. It’s called propaganda.

  • David P. Jordan

Yes…but if they truly understood railroads, they would think before lying.

At 10:50am a black and yellow train engine came by my house headed south horn tooting engineer waving. At 11:20 the black and yellow engine came by with a boxcar attached headed north on now unfrozen ground. Not bad for the old train,a 30 minute pickup and turn around.Toot toot, music to my ears.

  • The Mouse

I sure that self-centered, short-sighted, all-knowing Elaine will now claim the train waited for the ice to melt so it wouldn’t slide off those old tracks. I wonder who paid for the work -was it $600,000 worth or $2 million (I can’t keep their stories straight either) to get those old tracks in shape to use??

  • SD

I have it from the horse’s mouth that it was about $5,000 to rehab the tracks. Future work is being done on the signals and they will soon be all working. The city and village did not require the signals be kept in working order while CIRY ran the track and therefore it is onus upon them that these signals are not in working order. Shame
