School Board showdown tonight

Just a reminder about the school board meeting tonight from an e-mail from Diane Vespa:

Dear Friends,

There will be a meeting of the District 150 School Board [Monday] evening. At this meeting we will make an official request that they place on the agenda for the next board meeting of June 2 a vote to RESCIND the shortened school day and the reduction of specialty teachers.

Please join us and show your support for the parents, teachers and members of the community who have OPPOSED this harmful decision. This board meeting will once again take place at 6:30 pm at the District office located at 3202 N. Wisconsin Ave, Peoria.

We invite you to say a few words to the board, or simply support us through your presence.

We will also be handing out petitions. We invite all parents & concerned members of the community to secure a copy, reproduce it as needed, and start collecting signatures and phone numbers from members of the community that join with us in OPPOSING this decision. The phone numbers will be a great asset should a peaceful demonstration become necessary.

Please forward or cut and paste this e-mail to anyone who can help.

As you know, our children’s primary school education is the cornerstone of their entire educational future. I thank you in advance for your continued support and willingness to take up this cause on behalf of the area’s children.

Sincerely,
Diane Vespa

  • CJ – HOI News is doing a story on this at 5:00 and 6:00. They interviewed a board member as well as myself and Whittier parent Billy Luthy. Bill was great! Check out his comments on HOI news tonight at 5 and 6.

  • Martin Palmer

    Good Luck!
Be prepared to be called a “vocal minority”.

  • I think they will have a hard time saying that. Lol!

  • Bravo for HOI News! Really makes you wonder why the other TV stations have their heads buried doesn’t it?

Here’s a suggestion for those of you in attendance tonight…since the audio on TV from 150’s broadcast is generally weak pay attention to the smirks and huffs emitted by King Hinton when people speak out against his plan to rob the children of their 45 minutes. Also watch his eye rolls and mannerisms when BOE members cross him.

Gosh, maybe he’ll blow his stack again tonight like he did a couple meetings back and you can witness first hand what district employees see all the time!

    ^oo^~

  • It’s not just HOI News. I’ve heard from WEEK today and several others. I think the whole community sees right through this. Just watched the HOI segment. The comments from Bill Luthy were not aired. I hope maybe the 6:00 or 10:00 news will air them. He was great! It was raining though at the time and I wonder if they had trouble with the audio :(

  • Don’t worry – there was no fisticuffs, riots, or blood in the streets tonight at the board meeting. But King Hinton still showed his arrogance! He went on record saying once again that he has read this and that (right!) about the success of education in foreign countries and [I thought MY GAWD here it comes...he is going to finally eat crow...] BUT nope, the dope didn’t!!! Instead he said those countries have shared plan periods! Not a thing about longer days! Not a thing about longer years! Just shared planning periods! Hinton – you gotta go!

BTW Thank you folks who spoke tonight…even those who seem to be the pacifists – but what I saw tonight won’t convince the KING and his puppets! Enjoy throwing away your tax dollars and you equity in Peoria real estate as those 150 fools are out to ruin you!

    ^oo^~

  • I thought the board meeting went very well. We made our point loud and clear. I am very optimistic they will reconsider. Thank you everyone who showed up. You were awesome!

  • ImaSwede

Diane, sorry I couldn’t be there, but you were awesome! I think everyone did great! And everyone was was right on! Interesting Hinton doesn’t even live in the district! The BOE needs to remember who they represent!

  • [...] are details about the meeting from participants in the comments to this post. Diane Vespa — the leader of this merry band of insurrectionists — has yet to post [...]

Wait a minute… the teachers now need 45 minutes of “common time”, “professional development” time??????

What have they been doing for the past 100 years?

This is not about teachers’ professional development time.

Did anyone happen to catch the language in the PJS article this morning about anticipated savings from the shorter school day estimated between $645K-$810K? Why does the district suddenly have a shortfall this late in their fiscal year (ends 06/30)? Why aren’t they saying exactly what the problem is? This is a public body and their proceedings have to be available to the public. What are they hiding now?
