Last scheduled Council candidates forum tonight

There’s a candidates forum for the Peoria City Council at-large race tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the G.A.R. Hall, 416 Hamilton Blvd., downtown Peoria. The event is sponsored by the Central Illinois Landmarks Foundation (CILF), so there will certainly be questions about the candidates’ views on historic preservation. However, the questions will not be limited to that topic. Any city- or council-related issues are fair game.

I thought that topic was pretty thoroughly addressed at the Moss Bradley Forum.

  • My thoughts...

Agree with Paul. Waste of time for the candidates. Sounds like CILF hopped on the “Hey let’s have another candidate dog-n-pony show” bandwagon at the last minute. Seriously, will yet another forum tonight change a single mind? Doubtful.

  • Paul Wilkinson

Actually it ended up being an interesting forum with question diversity.

  • I was pleased that the forum was so well attended, and that it engendered lively and intelligent discourse.
Thank you for attending, CJ, and for making your case succinctly.
Best of luck on the 5th!

Paul W., the reason there was diversity in the questioning was because Eric Turner chickened out at the last minute & didn’t show. He’s the biggest punching bag for preservationists because of his vocal distaste for them, which stems from his ignorance & generalization of the subject. If he’d been there, it would have been like senior’s night at a UFC cage fighting championship.

  • Just the facts, please!

W Hernandez you don’t know what you are talking about. Turner had every intention of attending last nights forum but when they changed the date from the 17th to the 24th Eric told Mr. Lane right away he had a conflict with the new date. There was nothing “last minute” about it. Eric has attended 7 or 8 forums and this was the first he missed. So next time you designate someone ignorant and guilty of generalizations you might want to look in the mirror first. And by the way what does diversity in the questioning have anything to do with Eric Turner’s presence or not at said event? Please explain what you mean by that. I hope your obvious “distaste” and intolerance for anyone with a viewpoint other than your own is not typical of the organization you are defending, and if it is, I’d say the City Council made the right decision in terms of owner consent for historical designations.

  • While I don’t agree with Mr. Turner on historic preservation, I can vouch for the fact that he didn’t chicken out of anything. “Just the Facts” is right — he was going to attend when it was originally set for the 17th, but when the date was changed, he couldn’t make it because of a scheduling conflict. He told me that himself right after the date was switched to the 24th.

  • Just the facts, please!

Thanks, CJ. You are a stand-up guy and I’m voting for you!

  • W. Hernandez

My point was that if Turner had shown up, most of the questions would have been directed at him regarding his evident hated of preservationists in Peoria, the way it occurred at the Moss/Bradley forum.

  • Just the facts, please!

“the way it occurred at the Moss/Bradley forum.”
    W. Hernandez I believe it is precisely this militant, antagonistic attitude that you so proudly tout that caused a majority of council members to vote against giving you the absolute powers you sought over private owners of historical property. You’re thuggish approach hurts the case for historic preservation. Maybe you can take a manners class or brush up on some basic negotiating skills and try again some day.

  • W. Hernandez

I think you’re misunderstanding my comments. I was simply pointing out that Turner doesn’t seem to like preservationists and vice-versa. The UFC comment was intended to be humorous. I’ve never had power over someone else’s property and never taken part in land-marking a property. I wouldn’t know where to begin. I’m on their side, but leave that work to the experts.

I acknowledge that there were improper techniques used in the past by preservationists. Many preservationists now believe this also, which is why the Ad-hoc committee, at the request of the council, presented a better plan to city hall to include home-owners in the decision making process, but Turner ignored it entirely & talked 6 others on the horseshoe into voting with him on an equally brutal counter-attack. He admitted at Moss-Bradley that he made a mistake.

I’m just stating the facts here and throwing in a smidgen of hyperbole for dramatic effect.

  • I have found here and other forums that a little bit of hyperbole will make some people throw up.

  • pffft

It doesn’t make us throw up – just makes us think you’re assholes.

City Council Candidates Forum on TV:

Yesterday, I rushed through, edited the NAACP City Council Candidates Forum held last Monday. Had to edit down a 2.5 hour forum to a 1-hour show for CAPtions.

It will air on Wednesday, March 30 at 7 pm and later again
at Midnight on Comcast Cable 22; it will also air on Sunday, April 3
at 5 pm on Comcast Cable 22. The main issues I included in the show
    were opinions on CCW; infrastructure in North End vs. Inner city;
More transparency on city tax bills; and minority economic development.

CJ, I didn’t get to listen to all your answers, but from what I saw,
you did very well. I believe you will be elected to one of the 5 seats.

I left out one BIG topic: How involved should a City Council be with
    a public school district?
