No, not the Journal Star’s parent company. This gatehouse:
That’s the lower gatehouse at Springdale Cemetery, and it’s in such disrepair that it could collapse at any moment according to the cemetery’s Management Authority. They’ve voted 4-3 to demolish the structure. They say the cost is too high — estimates are $800,000 or more — to repair it.
It’s a shame that previous owners of the cemetery didn’t take better care of the historic structures.
Where is the Historical Society on this one?
Without reading the post, I assumed this was about the newspaper company.
It would be nice to save this historical building; however it is in a remote area and subject to vandals and druggies at night. So I guess that if it was saved a high fence would have to surround it and then to what purpose would it be used? Also, I really think that this lower entrance should be opened during normal hours as is the main entrance. It really makes for a lot more driving for folks living in the river valley area to go all the way up to Prospect.
Not that we need another “cause” 🙂 but is Springdale Cemetery on people’s radar around here?
Apparently not. 🙂
