From the Washington Examiner:
The private homes that New London, Conn., took away from Suzette Kelo and her neighbors have been torn down. Their former site is a wasteland of fields of weeds, a monument to the power of eminent domain.
But now Pfizer, the drug company whose neighboring research facility had been the original cause of the homes’ seizure, has just announced that it is closing up shop in New London.
To lure those jobs to New London a decade ago, the local government promised to demolish the older residential neighborhood adjacent to the land Pfizer was buying for next-to-nothing. Suzette Kelo fought the taking to the Supreme Court, and lost. Five justices found this redevelopment met the constitutional hurdle of “public use.”
A comment on the story in the New Haven Register says it all: “Karma working her magic in New London.”
Think Peoria and Cub Foods.
Wow…serves the city right. I feel sorry for the residents who lost their homes for what turned out to be no reason…
The “Justices” who made that decision should have been impeached. It was an outrageous decision that desperately needs to be reversed. They stole from the poor and gave to the big corporation. Those of you who want the govt. to control your health care and your thermostat had better take heed before the bell tolls for you!
The Mouse, I see you had to throw in “Government control of healthcare” to this discussion. Please tell me how the government is taking control of healthcare…
I guess you think it is alright that insurance companies make record profits, and will make even more if this health care bill passes.
I guess you think it is alright for insurance companies to reject people with pre-existing conditions. I just found out last night an old friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer yesterday and she does not have health insurance. Why? Because her and her husband have pre-existing conditions and no one would insure them.
If you think the insurance companies are doing a great job then keep giving them all the money they want. I have yet to see how the Government is going to control health care. That is just insurance company talking points, pure and simple!
Tragic, to say the least. It is actually kind of good this happened. Now maybe they can reign in eminent domain.
What a horrible slap in the face for the people who live there.
