In today’s Journal Star classifieds:
Employment Opportunity with Peoria Public Schools Peoria, Illinois Peoria Public Schools, Peoria, Illinois, has immediate openings for: SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS Qualifications: B.A./B.S. degree; must meet all other eligibility requirements required by Illinois School Code. Send resume and letter of interest to: Peoria School District 150 Human Resources Dept. 3202 N. Wisconsin Dept. Peoria, IL 61603 Attn: Substitute Teacher, We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.
Kind of a hardball tactic during contract negotiations. On the other hand, how many substitute teachers want to be scabs for District 150?
Two thoughts:
1. I am a substitute teacher. I have a certificate and have taught before.
2. I’d rather die than scab.
This ad is a call for anyone possessing a bachelor’s degree in any discipline – in certification parlance, a “type 39 substitute.” In plain English, these are not degreed teachers and their sub certificates must be renewed on a yearly basis. However, the ad did not preclude individuals who are degreed teachers in possession of valid Illinois teacher certification from applying.
No surprise here – a large proportion of the subs on the District’s sub list are “type 39” subs and always have been.
Back when I was subbing, I submitted my certificate and qualifications to District 150. I had been told many times that the district was hurting for subs willing to work in some of the “more urban” schools. A month later, I heard nothing and I called to find out what the problem was and was told that the there was a stack of sub applications that no one had bothered to open. Who was in charge at that time? Kay Royster.
Mr. Dennis – when were you subbing? There is one desk in the HR Department dedicated entirely to subs. If there was a backlog of sub applications the problem was with that desk.
…or they just didn’t like you
So are we to assume that this ad was only in regards to the pending strike? I am pretty sure I have seen similar ads for District 150 at various times during the years.
Perhaps they just needed subs.
