Globe Energy wants to use rail service

HOI News is reporting that Globe Energy would like to use the Kellar Branch:

Over at Globe Energy they want to build the rail spurs into their building. They say it’s not about shipping costs. It’s more about the environment. David Jones with Globe Energy said, “There is a chance over the next five years we could save about 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions that would come through trucks on the road that could be avoided if we used rail.”

Jones also said the Kellar Branch would be critical to exporting their heating systems to foreign countries by rail, although this isn’t a deal breaker for the company. “We are trying to put forward to industry that we are prepared to do it, provided that it can be done,” Jones said. If it can’t be done, then we will have to use trucks.”

So a vote for removing the rail line is a vote for 50,000 extra tons of CO2 emissions. I think air quality and not contributing to global warming is part of that “quality of life” stuff trail proponents are always talking about, don’t you?

  1. No matter what he says, David Jones isn’t going to use rail service solely for environmental reasons (I’m not questioning his honesty; I think he’s just speaking in language the press understands). For sure, rail service has an economic as well as environmental benefit to his company.

I’ve been told that Globe Energy wants to develop its own intermodal facility at its place of business. In addition, they will probably bring raw materials in by railcar. If the former is true, then one could expect rather brisk business amounting to several hundred additional carloads annually at full production.

This is the reason Central Illinois Railroad changed its mind.

Globe Energy’s announcement should sink any effort to turn the Kellar Branch into a trail. What say you, JSEB? Trail proponents?

  2. CJ, “quality of life stuff”, yes, yes, and yes. We’ve been trying to tell them that the railroad is helping the quality of life and always has and still brings jobs and the basics of life.

  3. Has anybody seen the CSX ads saying they move something like a ton 1123 miles on one gallon of fuel.

  4. I don’t know about CSX’s ad but I do know that the average rail freight is 1 ton for 400 miles for one gallon of diesel. No truck can do that. Norfolk Southern’s ad says 1 ton, 400 miles for one gallon of diesel.

  5. I don’t know much about Globe Energy so I looked them up – they skewer the English language on their website:

“Following the Success of the European Commission Sponsored Energy-Demonstration of our very latest technology at Caterpillar in Desford, Leicestershire UK in 2003, saving 80% of heating energy-costs, Globe Energy began exploring the United States of America to find the perfect location for setting up a new global business center to manufacture our world patented high efficiency energy-saving products in.

In Years 2003 & 2004, Globe Energy ECO-System UK produced two more EC demonstration projects for; BMW Motors in Swindon, UK, Saving 81% of energy-costs, and a statistically staggering energy saving project at Dublin Airport, in Ireland, saving the company 91% of the previous energy costs, more importantly the new system now heats their 120 feet high aircraft hangars properly at 9% of the previous cost.

No other technology or system can achieve heating and energy-efficiency anywhere near the efficiency of ‘Advanced Energy Technology’®
