Monday morning open thread

Too much to do, too little time. That means hobbies (like blogging) will have to wait.

But, in the meantime, feel free to use this space to comment on whatever is on your mind this morning.

  1. PJS’s anti-rail bias is on display again for all to read in today’s edition. What is also implied, is the idea that city govt. can & should regulate anything and everything. Too many in both political parties have bought into this notion. For otherwise tax & regulation adverse Republicans, intrusive regulations passed by City Hall are somehow more palatable than regulations passed by Congress. In fact, the former are far more harmful. Federal regulations are uniform, and there are Constitutional limits. Unfortunately, the far-seeing framers of our Constitution didn’t realize that eventually the biggest threat to our liberty would come, not from the federal whale, but from the swarming schools of municipal piranhas. The founding fathers thought feudalism was left in the Old World. Perhaps they should have suspected it would rise again in the form of municipal govt.

  2. The anti-rail forces are incapable of learning, since they keep rehashing old arguments, debunked here and elsewhere time and time again.

Mundelein tried to restrict trains from blocking crossings for more than ten minutes, and a Federal judge rightly struck it down. Other than the conflict between municipal and federal authority, it has so similarity whatsoever with the Kellar Branch issue.

A friend forwarded me this link from the Jan. 31 US News and World Report. It takes a brief look at the economies of six cities in Super Tuesday states. They had a rosy take on Peoria’s economy due to Cat’s strength.
