Also, have you seen the TV ads for “Build the Block”? I just saw one for the first time last night. I wonder how much this latest fundraising campaign is costing them. Between the full-page ads in the paper and television advertising, it can’t be cheap.
With the economy continuing to implode, you have to wonder about these peoples’ sanity.
I caught this on WEEK a week or so ago.
(From WEEK’s website)
“The East Peoria Chamber of Commerce held a breakfast this morning at the Par-a-Dice Hotel and Casino.
Business leaders were updated on the “East Peoria Downtown 2010” plan.
The vacant 100 acres once housed Caterpillar’s first factories.
East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus says, “It’s going to be a great adjunct to Peoria as far as the bridge concept of retail, residential commercial and sky’s the limit as far as what can go in there. Very exciting.”
The developer, Rick Jeremiah with Cullinan Properties says, “The site is already set up for a new road system. That will be built as a part of it. There will be a new road that bisects most of the caterpillar property everything will be built to a new urban style. Basically the old downtown feel where the buildings are close to the sidewalk.”
Plans include new retail stores, apartments and the possibility of a new library, city hall and museum for Caterpillar.
Cullinan Properties hopes to tie the existing downtown area in with the new area.”
Soooo…does this mean Cat has scrapped it’s plan to be part of the Build the Block?
Nope, apparently this area can support two CAT tourist attractions. The East Peoria gig is referred to as the Heritage Museum, while the block deal is a Welcome Center.
The Peoria Riverfront Museum will announce plans for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Peak Performance Center.
What kind of “performances” are they planning for this center? Basketball??
The IHSA Peak Performance Center will honor the rich tradition of the IHSA…everything from Basketball to Chess to Drama
“More Museum Plans Unveiled???”
This is OLD NEWS!!!!!!!! The IHSA inclusion was part of the original museum plan, remember….years ago before the first shovel full of dirt flew? This seems like another sorry, last-ditch attempt to entice the tax-paying voters of Peoria County.
Sharon, this media event is open to the public. I heard they were attempting to pack the gym with retired and active coaches, speech teachers, debate coaches, etc. so feel free to attend and find out for yourself exactly what this is all about.
the Whole Truth: I admit I haven’t been paying attention–and have no objection to the project–especially, if it includes speech, etc. Having just traveled to Peoria Academy to watch a speech tournament of middle school students last Friday, I think having a location downtown for such events would be great.
Since we are being blessed by the presence of the ‘WholeTruth,’ maybe ‘Truth’ can address my question/statement about “…the projected earnings, as predicted by the Museum Group” being “unrealistic” and “downright misleading!”
I’m getting ready for a nice peaceful relaxing weekend Voice, and I’m not going to get into an arguement with someone such as yourself who has expresses such bitter disgust for the planners of this project previously. I also don’t feel any motivation to discuss this with you based on your statement that “the projected earnings” predicted by the Museum Group are unrealistic. Believe me, the Museum Group has never predicted that the Museum would have any projected earnings. They understand that operating the Museum at a break-even status will be enough of a challenge without forecasting any projected earnings. You’ve also stated that their plans are old and nothing has changed since the “first shovel of dirt” flew. The Museum Group hasn’t moved a single shovel of dirt in this project, unless you’re referring to the demolition of the former structures on the site which were totally completed by Caterpillar Inc. So I’m taking the weekend off. You’re on your own.
“You’re on your own.”
– …and so it would seem are the people of Peoria.
Have a nice weekend Truth.
Since Mark Johnson told the County Finance Committee that the cost of the musuem has now risen approx. 15%, ask them to show the public an operating statement which has also had to rise..
No, the museum was never expected to show a profit. The question is, where if the rest of the money from to build it and who will pay the operating PROJECTED loss, year and year out?
And, no, the county is not going to own or operate any part of it.
It is possible that Gov. Blago will not sign the bill pushed by Peoria legislators.
I understand the museum was NEVER designed to turn a profit. Perhaps my choice of words – ‘projected earnings’ – was off mark. Merle has it.
Operating statement? Projected annual attendance?
The museum and the economy
Posted by C. J. Summers on October 8th, 2008
Johnson says annual attendance must hit 360,000. He sees it as 120,000 for the museum alone, 120,000 for the Caterpillar Experience alone and 120,000 who visit both.
…he sees the same numbers visiting the museum per day as the Caterpillar Experience: 667 (That figure includes overlapping of people who go to both sites. Total daily attendance for both is expected to average 1,000 individuals.).
The annual operating budget is pegged at $4 million. Jim Richerson, head of Lakeview Museum, says admission to various attractions would run $8 to $12. But revenue would also come from donations, room rentals, classes and souvenirs.

“…revenue would also come from donations, room rentals, classes and souvenirs…?” They must be talking a hell-of-a lot of souvenirs!
They base the above figures on …….what? Never did quite get that.
No Peoria County won’t own or operate the museum, but Peoria Country taxpayers will be footing the bill!
Post went nuts. There WAS a comet flying over when I submitted this post. It wasn’t my fault.
Novus Vox — I took all the gobbletygook out of your post. Hopefully it’s more as you intended now.
Many, many thanks! Novus Vox?
Me like.
