In the past, I’ve poked fun at Billy Dennis for the amount of advertising he has on his site. I once compared his ads-to-content ratio to WMBD Radio. But his site doesn’t hold a candle to Jen Christensen’s blog NewsAnchorMom. Holy mackerel, she has a ton of ads on that site!
After marveling at how many ads were squeezed into the header and sidebars, I thought I’d seen everything. But then, after reading a recent post, I spotted the pièce de résistance:
Methodist Medical Center’s new online healthcare program, MyMethodist eHealth, is a proud sponsor of this blog post….
That’s right. Each individual post is sponsored! I went to her blog to read something about television and kids, but I got so distracted by all the ads, I couldn’t concentrate on her story.
HAHAHAHAHAHA. That’s funny
CJ – Given the fact that her blog is an extension of HOI News I would imagine different standards apply. It’s probably not entirely up to her anyway. She puts a lot of time into her blog and the information is interesting and relevant. Why shouldn’t advertisers not support it?
Diane — I have nothing but admiration for Jen as a reporter. All I’m saying is that the number of ads on her blog is significantly above average and out of proportion to the amount of content. It doesn’t make her a bad person, and I’m sure it’s not her fault. But I still say, “Too. Many. Ads.” Nothing personal….
It holds my attention about as much as a lengthy Keller Branch post.
You fail to see the significance. It shows that there is a potential for blogs to be self-sustaining and actually provide an income to the blogger.
Granted, Jen has WHOI’s ad sales staff working on her behalf, but still.
Technologically, blogging is advanced enough. But the money isn’t there yet.
Well if it’s such a professional effort on the part of HOI News, then I think they could offer up a domain name and not be on E Blogger. I thought E Blogger was provided free so the average person could start a blog. After looking at Jen’s site, I must admit I didn’t know you could do that much to E Blogger in respect to ads and banners. All this makes me wonder if she doesn’t have staff writers doing the blog?
Isn’t using E Blogger like this like putting Cadillac hub caps on a VW?
I read Jen’s blog through an RSS feeder and never noticed the ads. :0)
Touche, Ian! That’s funny. 🙂
Hi, Thanks for the interest my little blog. I basically created it to give parents an easy way to find the information that is important to them. In the past, I would read a story on the news and then try to find the information the next month and it would be gone! Now, I put all the stories that interest me as a parent in one spot. I think I probably use my search engine more than anyone else! Hah!
It is an extension of HOI, but I do not have staff writers. That would be great if I did! I am a new blogger and still learning “blogger rules.” It was my choice to be hosted on blogger. It is not a blogger template though. Our graphics designer made the header! He does a great job!
I just hope she takes all the health warnings for kids with the huge grain of salt that is needed and not too close to heart, or we will see her young ones “kid in a bubble” blog hosted on the same site in a few years. Lighten up mommy, and don’t worry so much, your getting all wrinkly.
Jen, thanks for writing. I hope you know that I meant my post to be in good fun. I think you do a great job as anchor on HOI and your blog is very interesting — I hope more people will check it out. I still think there are too many ads, though! 🙂
Raoul, be nice; don’t get personal.
…you just have to know Raoul. That IS him being nice. Ha ha… he knows I love him though. 😉
No, I will not write for your blog Jen. Just playn around. I enjoy both Jen’s and C.J.’s work. I wouldn’t want to mess with either of them….or the Vespa!!! Just ask Hinton. Zing!
Well when she loses job as a journalist… no one cares about newspapers anymore, they are all going under….
… she needs another source of income. People like to read her thoughts, she is nice, and advertiser HAVE to get their message out there so they can manipulate the demand side of the free market to keep prices artificially high, so why not advertise on your blog? You got integrity or something?
