  1. When are the people of Peoria going to stand together and demand that changes (many) be made is District 150. Jobs, people, and industry are leaving because of the schools and the shabby way they are being administered. Adding Charter schools, tech ed schools, or Edison schools are not enough to make people WANT to stay. We should demand transparency for the districts finances, not just statements like: well, I spent money when I shouldn’t have……
Who does “the buck” stop with? The superintendent, who has clearly lost his way? Or the school board, who appears to be following the “lost” superintendent? Regardless, Peoria needs a DO Over for District 150!

  2. Schools are not the reason people choose to leave Peoria. That would be a shallow observation. Crime, lack of decent paying jobs, crumbling infrastructure are the reason people leave. Peoria has quality private schools and really, look past the hatred that has been spread about the District Admin and school board, Peoria does have decent public schools. It’s just some people don’t like the color….

  3. sayitain’tso!: Very well said. Hinton is in over his head and has tried to cover that up by using tactics such as fear and intimidation (towards employees).

Emtronics: Schools are a reason people have left Peoria. It may not be the only reason, but I bet if there was a survey taken of why people left I am sure the biggest reason would be the schools.

  4. ……and while people have left Peoria people continue to move into Peoria.
Sure, some people have elected to move to other school districts but plenty of good people have moved in at the same rate. I don’t believe there is a larger percentage of houses vacant and for sale in Peoria than other towns around the area.
I have no desire to leave Peoria. I live in a nice centrally located area of town with everything close by and convenient. Never been mugged or robbed and I feel safe walking down the street at night. Kids go to 150 schools and while not perfect show me a school that is.
I have no desire to live in Morton or Dunlap. Boring!

  5. There are two reasons Peoria continues its history of no growth, decay and failure…

There are too many Emtronics and peoriafans around with their heads in the clouds. “Ain’t it wonnerful here? Yeah, it sure is better here”

NO ONE moves here for the schools. NO ONE moves here for the job opportunities. (They may move here BECAUSE of a job offer… that’s different) NO ONE moves here because it is safe. NO ONE moves here because of our wonderful zoos, parks and museums…

  6. kcdad- what the hell are you doing here then?
Which town in Illinois should I be living in?

  7. Idiots!

People will begin to POUR into Peoria as soon as the museum is built!
    Schools be damned!!!

    Now……………………

Does anyone out there [besides me] think…just when Aaron Schlock couldn’t make a bigger ass of himself; he decides to take a little ‘fact-finding’ tour of GITMO. I just hope for his sake, his ‘super-macho’ reputation precedes him……. I am willing to bet he tries to talk a couple of former ‘detainees’ into coming back to Peoria with him……
probably promising them construction jobs…working on the new museum……….or teaching for District 150………….or running Peoria Chronicle…………….or something.

  8. kcdad: you make no sense. I live in Peoria and I like it here although I am pretty sure it’s not better here. Again, from what mountain top do you reside?

  9. I just find it kind of funny that the school board seems to be mad because the mayor had the audacity to question what’s going on in the school district. Shouldn’t the mayor be concerned about the condition of the district?

  10. Just so it is clear to you, Emtronics, this is my home. I went to school here and I met and married my wife here, I made many friends here and I buried many relatives here… that makes it home.

That I wish it were different is what drives me to bark at the moon. I want this place to be the guardian of my memories, but it is clear that within a few years all those memories will be gone, deserted or destroyed by Peoria’s self destructiveness.

I hate Peoria for what some people are trying to do to it; exploit its gentleness and rob it of its neighborliness.

I am sure I make no sense… perhaps I intend to, or perhaps I can’t help it in my madness.

  11. so kcdad -what have you done lately to make Peoria a better place?
(complaining on this blog does not count)

  12. I have to comment about the article in the PJS yesterday about some Dist. 150 Board members upset about Ardis’s comments, Spangler especially. She says people talk but won’t do anything (something like that). Well people have talked, given ideas, offered help and it’s the BOARD and HINTON that do not listen and act upon what people have said. Spangler didn’t even know there was a gang problem in Peoria. Help us all. She is the voice of Hinton; it is been quite obvious at the board meetings.

Kind of a scattered paragraph but I’m in a hurry!

Oh, I do live in Peoria and love it. I just would not send my kids to Dist. 150 schools. I do not like the decisions that have been made under Hinton and the people he has brought in. But believe me my tax bill proved I help support them.

  13. I refused to buy a home security system and put a sign in my yard simply because a dark skinned family moved across the street… I refused to ignore a homeless person downtown and talked and listened to him and shared my coffee and cigarettes with him… I donated time and work at a food shelter… I am making a film about river history and conservation… I take care of my neighbors when they need help…

So what do I do? Nothing that makes a difference, but everything that is consistent with my beliefs.

  14. kcdad- you still didn’t answer my question of where I should move that is better? What town in Illinois should I move to that I won’t have problems? If you can’t think of a town in Illinois that is any better then give me one in the midwest.

  15. Peoriafan,

I agree with you! The school system sucks. Local govt is off the wall [is Peoria City still in the red?]. We are about to get a multi-million dollar museum that will soon become another burden on the tax payers of Peoria [county].

kcdad is nuts for thinking something is broken in Peoria!

You ask what kcdad has done to make Peoria a better place………

What have you and your…..’kind’ done to make it worse?

  16. peoriafan: you should live where ever home is, just don’t pretend its perfect, don’t accept what the “experts” tell you is what has to be, think for yourself, imagine something better, and try and make it so.

  17. What’s up with the advertising in the Journal Star? Do they have some new hot shot salesman canvasing the state and beyond? Take a look at today’s section A (6-22-09). You’ll see ads for Mt Vernon, Litchfield, at least 3 businesses in Salem, 3 or 4 in Sikeston, MO, 1 in Berlin, KY and 1 in Mayfield, KY.
