  1. In the Peoria Journal Star today, Dunlap wants to build a new sewer treatment plant with the Sanitary District. I thought Dunlap wanted to be a rural community unlike Peoria. It is ironic that they want to expand sewer capacity which will allow new subdivision development just like Peoria.

  2. Have you seen the Dirty Jobs episode where he is in San Fransisco collecting garbage and then ends up and their big recycling facility?

They have a 67% garbage diversion rate which is the percentage of its total waste that is diverted from disposal at landfills and transformation facilities through reduction, reuse, recycling programs, and composting programs.

What got me about it was the employee that said they actually make money off the deal. Let’s get this straight, the are reducing waste at a landfill, making the earth better, and making money at the same time.

Why aren’t more waste management companies doing this?

  3. Just a note to remind drivers that in the state of Illinois you are required to have your headlights on when you have your windshield wipers on. Not your parking lights but your headlights. Also, don’t forget to turn them off when you shut the car off so you don’t end up with a dead battery. Have a great day.

  4. 1. I continue to hate the designated hitter crapola in the American League. Even after 30-odd years, I can’t stand it. Why stop there, after all? Why not just put your 9 best fielders in the field and bat your 9 best batters, huh?

    2. I hate the “no tie” crapola in college and pro football… any type of football game. There was a strategy involved with playing for a tie. It made it interesting, and carved up the standings in a neat way at times. There weren’t that many ties in football anyhow… but, per usual, someone HAS to have a winner or a loser, even if it goes against tradition.

    3. I hate the BCS set-up. Who cares if you finish #1 in college football? It is impossible to have a fair playoff system… too many good teams, too many that would be left out of the playoffs. When I was a young’un, the focus was on winning your conference and getting to the appropriate bowl game tied to that conference. The rankings were pretty much just for the fun of it. That’s the way it should be again.

    4. To Josh Harris… the reason why they’re making money on that stuff in San Francisco is because they cost of the dumping is so unbelievably high. Although it’s not cheap here, we still have plenty of land for landfills… out there, they don’t. Until that cost shifts way up for us, there will be no true profit margin for the waste companies in recycling. We end up having to depend on a recycling company in which that is ALL that they do, in order for there to be a profit in it.

    5. Leave it to a law school student to write an editorial page “column” against increasing health coverage for the people who cannot afford it.

    6. The old dude who wrote an op-piece in the PJS editorial page today needs some serious laxative treatment. “Woe is us, the world is falling apart.” Jeez… it’s called Ex-Lax, pal.

    7. Is Leslie Fark REALLY that pretty in real life?

    8. How soon will Jim Ardis announce that he’s running again for Mayor? By December?

    9. I’ll soon be taking bets on what percent Dick Versace will get in next year’s election. 38%? 43%? Right now, my bet is his not making it that long.

  5. One of the touted positives of sprawl is that low density housing is more fire safe than dense urban development. So after a week of burning the sprawl of San Diego and Los Angeles to the ground, can we consider this benefit refuted? It isn’t like the space between houses is empty. Surprise, surprise people fill it up with landscaping. When was the last time you read about 1000s of acres of urban development being burned to the ground outside of a war?

  6. Does anyone know the details of the assault involving mayer Ardis son and three other Richwoods boys on a girl on Sherwood ave thursday night. I know the police were called but have seen nothing in the paper. The girl did not go to school friday because she was so upset. Is this just one more time when the mayer will be able to pull strings and keep his son out of the slam?

  7. No doubt it would be in the newspaper or on any of the three television stations or the many radio stations or the blogs if it happened, which I doubt. If you know the name of the victim, please forward to any media outlet so they can check. Leaving an anonymous comment on a blog is B.S., in my opinion.

  8. Additionally, and at the risk of being accused of carrying Mayor Ardis’ water, I’ll add that when his son was ticketed for DUI, he faced the music like anyone else and NO special favors were called in.

  9. Chicago and Cook County are proposing large tax increases. The CTA has proposed severe cutbacks in bus routes if new funding is not approved by Nov. 4. Chicago traffic is gridlocked and getting ever worse. Peoria has an opportunity to appeal to ex-pats who are tired of the high cost of living and hassles of Chicago, and other Midwestern cities. While Peoria has its own problems it has many beautiful older neighborhoods that would appeal to ex-pats who wish to remain in an urban environment.

Reducing crime and improving education would help make Peoria more attractive. Companies such as Firefly and Globe Energy are poised to add jobs and attract talent. I think there are Peoria ex-pats looking for reasons to return. If Peoria could publicize its comparative advantages over larger cities we could attract people back to our city.

  10. Billy Dennis knows Leslie Fark. Maybe he can answer the question posed by Prego Man.
On the topic of Mayor Ardis’ son getting in trouble, we’ll see if the media can pick something up on it. He did face the music when his son got busted for DUI. I’ve heared since then, he’s failed to return phone calls to that reporter who aired the family’s dirty laundry.

  11. I do know the name and address of the girl. The mayor was called and arrived about the same time as the police. Billy I look foward to watching you have to eat your words on this one.

  12. The Mrs. recently had a big meeting at the new incubator building on Main. She reported that it was HORRIBLE.

There are far far too few bathrooms.

The sound proofing of the conference rooms are abysmal. The noise of traffic, through the plate glass windows, was drowning out the speaker’s presentations. Glass was too thin or poorly mounted or something. She said it might as well not have been there at all.

And the lighting… oh the lighting , while it may be they just didn’t know the controls, there was difficulty adjusting the lighting to make the screen presentations properly visible. Some interfering lights simply could not be turned off.

Anyone else have some experiences there yet?

Did we get our tax dollars worth on this thing?

  13. Why does everyone suspect that one is out to stalk and try to have a relationship with someone if you state that that someone is attractive?

Billy, it doesn’t matter if she’s “happily married,” “angrily married,” or single with 11 cats living with her… I simply asked if she was as pretty as her photo indicates.

    Sheeeeeeesh.
