  1. Always remember to believe and live your dreams ….

Watch the faces of the judges as this guy walks out on the stage. You can almost see what they are thinking as they pre-judge this guy based on his looks and the fact that he is a cell phone salesman.

Maybe this guy stopped believing in what people told him for so many years and ultimately started listening to his passion.

  2. What the ensuing UAW strike with GM. The outcome of the strike and negotiations could have a significant impact here in the river city.

One of the heated issues is who is going to be responsible for retiree health care. GM wants the UAW to take on that responsibility. This matters to Peoria because there are lawsuits underway between Caterpillar and UAW retirees over … you guessed it, who is paying for retiree health care. If the UAW does pick up the health care tab at GM, it could have huge implications for unions all over the U.S..

Another way to look at the ensuing strike is that we may also be looking at the death knell for the UAW at GM. GM and Ford both are in terrible shape. Both carry a huge burden in retiree benefits that isn’t shared by their competitors. The possibility of GM or Ford going under for good is very real. It may come down to a life or death struggle. We will see.

  3. Anyone concerned about the proposed 4 am expasion for bars? There is to be a vote tomorrow night.

  4. The League of Women Voters of Greater Peoria will be hosting two candidates forums, in December and January, and the public including bloggers can attend these and ask questions.

  5. Here is a question that might interest you, C.J.. Why is maternity leave considered a ‘disability’? Many companies today treat it as such. In fact, many HR departments cannot even call it maternity leave lest it conveys some gender bias. You are disabled. By calling it a disability, are we not giving it a negative connotation. Companies want to reduce disabilities. Do companies want to discourage child rearing?

  6. Brad — I think there will be enough candidates forums without bloggers adding another one.

Mahkno — Congrats on your new baby! I think the reason they call it disability is to keep from having to offer “paternity leave” out of fairness. It’s their way of saying “we’re only offering maternity leave because of woman needs time to heal physically from childbirth.” That’s my guess.

  7. Why would a business want to promote child rearing? They are not a church trying to build up the future flock. How does employees having kids benefit the business?

  8. CJ,

Oh absolutely is has to do with the paternity leave question and PC politics. It also has to do with which benefit bucket it comes out of too.

Is labeling maternity leave a ‘disability’, family friendly? Is it woman friendly? Are women intrinsically disabled? The wife is uncomfortable with this labeling. It isn’t a disability to have a child. A disability is when you cannot perform some basic function. Child birth most certainly is a basic function and it is working quite well.

  9. It is a temporary disability; she is unable to work for the company. If she doesn’t like being labeled temporarily disabled then she can go back to work. I don’t think you have to take the leave.

  10. How does child rearing benefit businesses? Well it means that the employees need their jobs to pay for those children. The children are future employees too. There are a myriad of reasons why businesses should help with employees having children. It makes for happier, more stable employees and communities.

  11. Maybe we should just call it maternity leave, and stop calling it an ‘injury’ and an ‘accident’. If the whole gender fairness issue ruffles feathers… well guess what, paternity leave is good for families too.

  12. Julie: You are welcome. When we can help others to live their potential, then we would really see dramatic positive change in Peoria (and elsewhere) instead of the pervasive “I am a victim and you are violating my rights” mentality.
