Risinger resignation could start musical chairs on council

Sen. Dale Risinger is resigning, and Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis wants to be appointed to fill the senate term. If that happens, the council would have to appoint a new mayor. If they appoint a sitting city council member, then someone else will have to be appointed to take that council member’s place. If they appoint an at-large city council member — for instance, Eric Turner has indicated he would like the job — it will impact the at-large city council race.

Whew! It certainly will be interesting to see who gets chosen and the impact it will have.

  1. Sandberg for mayor?

It might actually be a prudent move for sitting at large candidates to push for that. You know he is going to win his at-large seat. So push him off to the mayor slot, where he can run uncontested next time around, and free up those at-large votes he vacuums up.

  2. Eric Turner as mayor? What a joke, he should just retire. I vote for Sandberg but know I will be vetoed.

  3. If someone at large sitting on the current council is appointed mayor will they appoint someone to fill that spot? and could it be a canadate that is running for council? That could give that person an advantage.Or could they leave that unfilled ? That would create 2 empty spots until the election.

  4. Politics in Peoria seems to mimic the machine politics in Cook County more and more; much of any change is preordained. For example, I believe that when some on the Council brought Scott Moore to Peoria it was with ‘temporary’ in mind and Patrick Urich was already the chosen one. Same here with Dale’s early departure; the decisions have already been made. The ‘Power Elite’ have a huge investment in Jim Ardis and Jim is slowly losing his halo as Mayor. If they feel Jim’s value as Mayor will diminish with this spring’s election and Patrick’s arrival, placing Jim in Dale’s position would make a lot of sense.
However, there will be many others who will want to ‘throw their hats in to the ring’, further dividing a weak Republican party. It will be interesting.

  5. The only problem with Sandberg for Mayor is that there would be no more cover ups in city government. Everything would become transparent and we would know about all the upcoming deals before and after they were done and I doubt that Peoria politicians could handle that. There would be a terrible implosion and we would lose all the curtains being used to hide everything now. Could we possibly live with Peoria being fixed from the infrastructure outward instead of all the window dressing we are now paying for daily?

  6. When I was younger, my dad and I ran into Eric Turner at Bachrach in the mall. I don’t remember the exact vote, but it was something on a large scale. My dad asked when they were going to finally vote on it. Eric Turner says “why do something today when you can put it off until tomorrow.”

So why make Eric Turner Mayor today when you can just put him off until tomorrow?

  7. This is so blatantly dirty it is hard to miss. The appointment to Risingers seat won’t happen until after the city election. Why? It makes sense and it is dirty dirty dirty and the 1 reason you should all call Risingers office and tell him to put anyone else besides Ardis in there. If they wait until after the election you have only 2 seats being elected by the public. Based on whta has been going on in this election and it is unfortunate, all 3 incumbents will be back in office. Sorry, but the others are being too nice and not making enough noise. That leaves 2 seats. Weaver will be one because he has been campaigning the hardest and raisng the most money. Grayeb gets the other because of name recognition and a base already established. So if you wait until after the election, the new mayor and it is going to be Ryan Spain gets to appoint the other council person and will appoint another puppet to maintain control of the council. If you appt Ardid before the city election you allow Beth Akeson or CJ Summers to get in and they don’t want that because that would be a tipping point and cause too much trouble for the new young mayor. Dirty Dirty Dirty… Wake up Peoria…

  8. I see Sandburg as a Chris Christy type in NJ. While I don’t like his politics so much, I like that he tells it like it is.

  9. Here is an eye popping solution to Peoria’s structural deficits ….

    1. Houston, Texas ….. Speed traps: 373 …

The number of tickets was even more staggering when the economy was bad: In March of last year, KTRK Channel 13 found that Houston police officers wrote about 3,000 tickets per day, or 147 an hour!

TrafficTicketSecrets.com says the average speeding ticket in the U.S. is about $150. Multiply that out and that’s $450,000 a day—and $14 million for the month.

  10. Chicago senator Rickey Hendon (D)just resigned. For all the dems that just gave Risinger grief here is your opportunity to back peddle.
