Tonight, the Peoria City Council pulled the plug on the Heart of Peoria Commission. The vote was 8-3 to disband the commission, with council members Gulley, Sandberg, and Spain voting against the motion.
Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust.

Next to be disbanded the RENAISSANCE PARK COMMISSION ??
Well it’s hard to be surprised with this action, when it was clear a year or so ago, the majority of the council didn’t support the committee. The Committee itself did itself in by voting to disband -giving the Council an opening to walk away from this group. I think the first step should have been a fight to get more resources before the vote to disband. I think we’re going to be worse off without this committee’s involvement.
Amen to that Peo Proud.
Personally, I think it’s a good thing to disband the committee. The HOP plan was a failure. Sure, we got new codes which should help and that’s a lot of work but the city was never going to embrace new urbanism and nearly all the ideas in the HOP plan were ignored save the codes, the museum and the warehouse district. And the latter two were already in progress. Still thanks to CJ and all the others who worked so hard. It would have been nice to have seen people support the notion.
The people on that Commission were just beating their head against a brick wall. Unless you enjoy that sort of thing, my guess is you can find a more productive use for your time.
As a member of the Neighborhood Development Commission when it bit the dust, I am sad to see the HOPC go away. There is only so much you can do with a mission that has no funding or city buy-in.
