First murder of the year? With the break in the weather, it didn’t take long.
I heard a rumor that the new parking garage for Bradley University is a whopping nine feet over where the city zoned it for and the neighborhood association by Bradley is furious.
I repeat that this is only a rumor and that I don’t have anything to back it up, but I did hear it from a fairly reliable source.
Samantha — the parking deck is indeed too close to Main. It’s supposed to be set back 25 feet from the right-of-way, but instead it’s 16 to 23 feet set back (it’s set back from the road an even distance but the official right of way doesn’t follow the curve of the road). Anyway, suffice it to say the building is in the wrong place.
However, I have not heard that any neighborhoods are “furious.” In fact, the Uplands just had their neighborhood association meeting tonight, and the consensus appeared to be that the extra 9 feet wasn’t a big deal as long as we can parlay that error into a better pedestrian experience along that stretch. Specifically, instead of getting the six-foot sidewalk in the original plan, there’s a good chance we could get a 16-foot sidewalk with street trees and additional landscaping that would camouflage the front of the deck, so to speak. I can’t speak for other neighborhood associations, of course.
Note: there wasn’t a vote specifically on supporting the variance tonight, but in my opinion, everyone seemed to support it if we can get better landscaping out of the deal.
Hey, wow, that was quick. Again, my source may not have been entirely reliable. Nine feet seems like an awfully large mistake though.

Clarification: “…modem rental charges removed…”
