Just a reminder, Northwest Airlink is starting Peoria – Detroit service today, with 50-seat jets. We haven’t had JET service to Detroit in 21 years (and that was for only several months in 1986 on Republic Airlines). Previously, Ozark Air Lines flew nonstops to the Motor City in Dec ’76 to Apr ’81. It’s good to see the momentum at the Greater Peoria Regional Airport!
Woo hoo…I’ve been dying to go to Detroit! How about a destination someone would want to go?
Peo Proud,
Would it make you feel better if I said that Peoria was getting nonstop flights to Romulus, Michigan today?
Seriously, though, the new service gives Peoria area air travelers an alternative to Chicago-O’Hare, as Detroit Metropolitan Airport is a huge Northwest Airlines hub. Most will simply make connections to other NW flights. Also, flights to and from Detroit are less likely to be canceled during inclement weather.
Glad to read today that the Roosevelt trip money has been properly accounted for. Perhaps Jenkins can now be âun-lynchedâ at least for that accusation. On the other hand I believe the public deserves an accounting from King Hinton as for how much the districtâs auditor Clifton Gunderson LLP has charged 150 to conduct that audit. Those professionals do not work for free. Besides they keep very precise records of their time spent so it should be easy to find out. If and when it is ever revealed I am sure it will be a sizeable amount considering the weeks turned into months to get the report on a mere $48,299 trip. Talk about swatting a fly with a sledge hammer! Gosh I wonder why Court Jester Cahill and his merry band of accounting staff couldnât have handled that task! But, hey itâs just taxpayer money so why should they care? ^oo^~
DPJ: No it wouldn’t. I’d like to see more direct flights to other hubs. While I’m aware that Detroit is a big Northwestern hub, I’ve been entirely unimpressed with the service provided by that carrier. How about direct (or more – depending on the situation) flights to: St. Louis; Cincinnati; Dallas; D.C.; Atlanta. Any of those are much better hubs for reliability (with perhaps the exception of Atlanta — and Dallas this year) and connection to a variety of airlines.
I avoid with a passion any flight connecting thorugh O’Hare – it’s just too unpredictable when you’ll actually get out of there. I’ll give Northwest and Detroit a chance (better than nothing) but doubt that it’ll add much convenience for the business traveler….or at least this one.
What we really need to do is close both of the existing Peoria and Bloomington Airports and locate one directly between these two MSAs to have any real potential for good service in the area.

We already have service to Atlanta and Dallas/Fort Worth. St. Louis was dropped due to insufficient business (not a surprise since American Airlines downsized its hub there in 2003) so its not coming back; Delta reduced Cincinnati service by 26% in late 2005, placing more emphasis on its Atlanta hub so it’s not gonna happen either, unfortunately. Springfield just got a daily nonstop to Washington-Dulles. If those flights don’t work out maybe we can persuade them to shift it to Peoria.

I’d rather see Bloomington-Normal’s airport lose all commercial airline service to Peoria đ
IMHO, an joint airport should have been built in the 1960’s before too many improvements were made.
OTOH, Peoria’s airport has had the momentum as of late, going from 5 to 9 nonstop destinations, and perhaps 10 or 11, in a year – the most since the early 1980’s. Bloomington-Normal just gained Las Vegas service, its 5th nonstop destination. Sure, the Twin Cities handled more passengers than Peoria did in 2006 but close to half were making connections via one hub, Atlanta, due to the competition between AirTran and Delta. Peoria will likely handle the most passengers in 2007. If our new service is successful, 2008 should be a record year.
Three Cheers for the 7th. Circuit Court of Appeals for affirming the well-deserved conviction of George Ryan, and a bouquet of weeds to the one dissenting Judge. Let’s hope they stick by their previous order and he finally goes to jail, where he belongs!
I got called today concerning an anti-war rally on Aug 28th at the Peoria Library… was bizarre. Why would they do mass callings for this? They must be pulling voter data. Seemed rather… odd.

NW going to Detroit is a good thing. You may not want to go to Detroit, but DTW is a major hub for NWA. You can go to anywhere in the far east or Europe through Detroit.
Hmmmm, there appears to be a new ‘Ben’ in town. I am still the one-and-only ‘ben’. đ
