PeoriaIllinoisan doesn’t mince words:
The Reader’s Choice Awards are a joke. A tool. A way to bring in and reward advertisers. It has nothing to do with the readers and there is hardly much choice involved.
He’s got a point. After reading his post, I took a look at the Journal Star Readers’ Choice Award ballot, and out of 56 categories, 38 (68%!) had only one business from which to “choose.” Looks like a sham to me.
What a joke!!! And yes…Taco Bell made the list for best Mexican ‘restaurant’ again.
Time to do a little FireBug editing and submit some real answers:
Mexican – Jalapenos
Steakhouse – Jim’s Bistro
Attorney – Dead one
College – University of Illinois – AT CHAMPAIGN-URBANA
Hardware – Menards
Italian – Rizzi’s
I just came back from a long weekend break in southern Indiana. No computers. This morning, I started looking at the blogs I usually check out, and I realized how little I missed. Then this clown says Attorney – Dead one. So killing someone is a joke is it? Haven’t we had enough wackos going around killing attorneys and judges because the wackos can’t function in society and think they can take it out on others. Didn’t we just get all upset when Palin had a rally where when she mentioned Obama, some people in the crowd yelled “kill him” Palin got heat for not shouting the sickos down or for refusing to repudiate these clowns. Well Pez, consider yourself shouted down, and CJ, you need to repudiate this statement.
DD- I am guessing you are an attorney?
Hardware – Nena’s has much better customer service. Support the local guy when you can!….. and you don’t have to bag your own stuff.
dd — I think you’re overreacting a bit here. First of all, Pez didn’t say anything about “killing” anyone. He said his favorite lawyer is a “dead one.” Could have died by natural causes, for all we know. Secondly, and maybe Pez can confirm this, I’m just about positive it was meant as a joke.
But, lest there be any confusion regarding the Chronicle’s stand on lawyers, I hereby state unequivocally that the Chronicle and its editor are opposed to the killing of lawyers, except by the state after they have been tried, convicted, and sentenced to such, according to due process of law. Remember, don’t take the law into your own hands; you take them to court.
in arguing about dead lawyers you guys missed the fact that the so-called ballot only lists three – 3!. Imagine if the Peoria area only had three lawyers.
Then again, if there was a category for “daily newspaper” I guess there would only be one candidate. As they say, “how’s that working out for you?”
As for these “Readers Choice” awards, I doubt anybody pays any attention to them, but if some of the hundreds of businesses that didn’t make the ballot consulted a – LAWYER, the sham might be ended (as it should be).
Of course it was a joke, that’s what makes it disgusting. As for a lawyer’s perspective on killing lawyers, don’t ask me, ask someone you all respect.

Are you really unable to make a distinction between a run-of-the-mill lawyer joke and the murder of an actual lawyer? Seriously?
There’s nothing funny about literally pulling someone’s leg, either. Just ask a chiropractor. And don’t even get me started about PETA’s concerns about chickens crossing the road!
Did the “nominees” pay to have their names listed on the ballot? That’s the way we did it in Glendale California 20 years ago, to sell ads in a “special consumer poll” addition.
If that was the case, BRAVO!!!! to the businesses that refused to participate in such a sham.
dd: Bad day? It was a jest. Calm down, deep breaths… Talk about going wacko. Have you not heard of dead lawyer jokes?!?! Sorry, I forgot the 🙂 I’ll remember next time.
Maybe you should shoutdown (and then mention that you shouted down) Brain Candy (http://www.corsinet.com/braincandy/jklaw.html) for wanting to bury 25 attorneys in cement or putting 5000 in the bottom of the ocean. That wacko is advocating a genocide !! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
BTW, This whole “kill him” thing may not have happened at all. Several news sites (e.g. http://primebuzz.kcstar.com/?q=node/15066) are stating the the Secret Service says that all these reports are unfounded. And you would think the Secret Service would be the first to take this seriously.
Sorry Pez, but the best Mexican restaurant in Peoria is La Familia on Wisconsin. Not great ambience but by far the best food.
