Bradley names new men’s basketball coach

From my inbox:

Geno Ford, the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year the last two seasons at Kent State University, will become the 13th head coach in Bradley Basketball history when he is formally introduced to the public during a noon press conference Monday in the Renaissance Coliseum arena.

The press conference will be open to the public and will be streamed live online at BradleyBraves.com. The Main Street Parking Deck will be open to members of the media and all attendees are encouraged to enter the arena through the Nick & Nancy Owens Atrium. The event also will be streamed live at http://www.bradley.edu/inthespotlight/story/?id=130731.

Ford replaces recently-fired men’s basketball coach Jim Les.

  1. What I don’t understand is this “contract” thing. Both Les and this 5’9″ giant of basketball coaching are holding contracts that go at least 2 or 3 years into the future…

What is the purpose of a contract?

Why would Kent State be willing to UNLOAD this guy when they have a contract to keep this paragon of round ball excellence around for 4 more years?

    Anyone else smell Roysterism???

  2. Kent didn’t “unload” him. Bradley “stole” him away. Most schools will not hold a coach against his wishes. There is probably a “buy-out” amount that Bradley will have to pay to void the deal. It is rarely the remaining value of the contract, but usually a set sum (like $100,000).

If BU is paying him $600,000K as repported, they are not going on the cheap.

  3. “Bradley stole him”

And people wonder why our society is in so much trouble…

Go after a guy that will dump his contract, his WORD, for a few bucks… What a model for the students…

  4. I agree kcdad. We are in the crapper when we value a coach that is paid over a half a million dollars and students studying the sciences that might someday change the world have to grovel for money to get a college education.

  5. Oh yeah….

When the second highest paid ’employee’ at Bradley happens to be a basketball coach… well….welcome to America!

Sure, the other schools are doing it….!

Surely the rest of the world doesn’t know what they are missing out on!

  6. What a waste of money. The guy may be worth the money but is it worth it to Bradley to hire a guy for that kind of money? Does Bradley really need a top tier basketball team? The money could be better spent enhancing what the university exists for, academics. You could hire a perfectly capable coach for the price of a Department Head.

  7. Sports is what gets fans buying tickets and money in the door. Face it, Mahkno, if it weren’t for college sports, a lot of the less popular classes wouldn’t exist, and that Department Head would soon be out of a job. Money makes the world go round, and Bradley understands that better than most. Go Braves!

  8. Mr Smith, I think you would be surprised how little Athletic money actually goes to the academics.
