  1. There will be a candidate forum with Jehan Gordon and Jim Montelongo tonight (Wednesday, Oct. 6)- Gift Avenue Advocacy Center (501 E. Gift).

  2. Hopefully the Leauge of Women (Democrat) voters won’t be as RUDE to these Republican candidates as they were at Childers last weekend. Their phones went off during [only] the Republicans turn to speak, they made all the Republicans go first, and openly made a fuss of it when the Republicans objected. This group has zero class. And when they say a $7.50 breakfast, they mean a $7.50 muffin. And don’t even think about getting out of there before lunch time. Good luck to the candidates. Hope you make it out alive.

  3. Someone somewhere suggested that DK Hirner show up with a cardboard cut out of Aaron Schock’s abs photo or his fashionable red shirt, white pants combo. I think this is an outstanding idea.

I can see why Schock would avoid the league of women voters after he voted ‘no’ on legislation for equal pay for women. Would be a tough crowd trying explain why the audience should be paid less than their male counterparts.

  4. I’m not a Schock supporter, but this characterization of him is unfair — Schock never voted against equal pay for women. He voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, which changed the law so that “the 180-day statute of limitations for filing an equal-pay lawsuit regarding pay discrimination resets with each new discriminatory paycheck,” instead of the law up to that point which said “the statute of limitations for presenting an equal-pay lawsuit begins at the date the pay was agreed upon.” Those who were opposed to the Act were not against equal pay, but against “business executives [being] held liable for actions taken by managers who weren’t leading the company anymore.”

Characterizing this vote as voting “‘no’ on legislation for equal pay for women” is unfair and inaccurate. Good politics, though.

  5. Thanks CJ. Unfortunately, in politics, these broad inaaccurate statements get attention and influence votes.

How could any voter be so naive to believe that ANY politician would vote no on equal pay for women?

As am aside, CJ, I appreciate the fact that you call an inaccuracy an inaccuracy, regardless of the political persuasion.

  6. Mahko.
once again your ill informed posturing amuses me. The Congressman has another commitment in another part of the district scheduled long before this forum. I will be present so will have first hand knowledge. re: DK, When your entire strategy is to play down your opponent and fail to provide even mediocre points to vote for yourself, I say you have a weak campaign. PS, I have spoken with DK, it was a pleasant conversation and was glad at that moment she wasn’t slamming our Congressman.

Addionally, while on the topic, I also heard about the one sided forum already held by the league of women voters. Disspointing as they are a non profit I believe, but that others look to them for advice on community issues. If the purpose of a forum is give candidates a fair arena to present their case, beliefs, qualifications, etc, then the past forum failed miserably. Whether you support a particular candidate or not, it is good decorum as hosts to show equal interest and respect, for instance, either clapping for both or for none equally after presentation. This is, however, second hand information and I presenting it as such.

  7. my understanding popijw is that she lives in Springfield, outside of the 18th Congressional District.

  8. Don’t know where to put this, so I’ll put ti here…

Just got off the phone from an automated poll.
    Asked (in this order):
    Likely to vote (1-5 scale)
18th District (listed Democrat first, Repub, 2nd, Green 3rd)
Obama Policies (1 not far enough, 2 too far, 3 about right, 4 no opinion, 5 other)
    2008 Presidential vote cast (1 McCain, 2 Obama, 3 didn’t vote)
    Gender
    Age

When it was done I didn’t hang up and it said it was sponsored by DNC but not affiliated with any candidate. I did not see any slant, nor were there any leading or polarizing questions.

  9. Oh who really cares about the Schock debate?!! He is in a very safe angry republican district. Yes, DK lived (s) out of district. She is token opposition just like Waterworth. Shock will be in congress until he runs for Senate or President. Hopefully he will be stopped at some point. Enough of his charade. I hope he wakes up and votes his conscience on several issues rather than towing the republican line. Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Repeal It. What a stupid policy.

  10. The statute of limitations is ESSENTIAL in enforcing fair pay.
Many companies have a 60 or 90 day ‘probation period’ in which an employee can be dismissed for any reason. After that, that leaves a very limited amount of time for the employee to realize they are being discriminated against in pay before they no longer have legal recourse.

As with most Republican “block and stalls” in this Congress, it isn’t the obvious that one must look at.
