Journal Star gets new online look

If you look up the Journal Star’s website today, you’ll notice something different. They have completely revamped it. It now looks like other Gatehouse Media newspaper websites, like the Galesburg Register-Mail.

It looks nice. It’s got a good, clean layout, good multimedia features, and is easy to navigate. It also loads faster. In short, all the things the Journal Star said would happen, happened.

My only complaint, though minor, is that I used to be able to easily look at an index of all the stories for a particular day by typing in something like “pjstar.com/stories/052008” — this would give me all the stories for May 20, 2008. You could put any recent date in and get all the stories from that day. I don’t see any way to do something similar on this new site. Perhaps that won’t be necessary with this new layout anyway.

Check it out and see what you think.

  1. Ok, is it just me or does the site look exactly the same as it did yesterday? I have refreshed my browser and doesn’t seem to matter.

  2. I don’t totally understand the inner workings of the internet, but I do know that when you switch things to a different server (which is what I believe the JS did), it takes a while for all the DNS servers to get updated so that when you put “pjstar.com” in your browser, the internet goes to the correct server. I get the new site when I go to pjstar.com. But you may not get it yet. You should get it within 24 hours, I believe. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

  3. The paper said it would take a while for the ISPs to change the way that they look at the web site. how that works, I don’t know.

  4. Nevermind, it works now.

I wish they would get rid of that banner promoting stories in the paper. Its not that well done and if readers want to find them they will, especially with a much easier to navigate interface.

  5. There are people at the paper who would like to get rid of those promos, too, 11Bravo. But not the people who count.

  6. I’m not real thrilled with the new website. Also on mine you get the whole story and the same story under the photo. Seems like a waste of time and space to me to get it twice.

  7. So, does the pjstar not update online on Sundays any longer? It’s after 10 AM. And has anyone else noticed it looks an awful lot like week’s website?
