K’s Merchandise is no more

The Journal Star reports that K’s Merchandise is going out of business — the whole chain. Liquidation sale starts Thursday.

K’s is practically right next to the Kellar Branch. Wouldn’t it be nice if a rail-served business (light industry, warehouse) moved into that property? Oh, wait, we can’t try to attract that kind of business because we want to take the rail line out and put in a bike path. Oh well. Maybe the car dealership next door will buy it.

  1. That sure explains why they have been getting rid of all of their furniture the last few weeks.

Good idea – Dunlap School District could use another car dealer. 🙂

  2. A group of investors tried to revitalize the stores earlier in the year with the help of their vendors (by giving deep one time discounts) to keep the stores alive and stave off bankrupcy. Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out. I respect that they are closing without declaring bankrupcy and the Cedar Rapids Gazette claims that they will pay their employees and vendors what is due. That’s a classy move. I haven’t received any official notice of their intentions yet, but I’ve got a vested interest in this, so I hope the story is true.

  3. Let me say that after going in there to look for furniture and supplies when we were moving back in town … I’m not surprised they’re going out of business. Selection and quality were really lacking. I was frankly surprised they lasted this long with competition from Walmart, Target, etc.

  4. I drove by K’s yesterday and it looked like a madhouse. Let the scavenging begin!
