Landscape waste pickup may change to pay-as-you-go

The City estimates it could save $1 million by passing the costs of landscape waste pickup to users. Under the proposal that heads to the Council next Tuesday night, landscape waste pickup the first two weeks of March and the month of November would still be “free.” But the rest of the year, those wishing to dispose of landscape waste would need to purchase a sticker (“tag”) for each bag of waste they want picked up. Alternatively, they could rent a special landscape waste cart that would include pickup as part of the rental fee.

  1. Yeah… had a neighbor point to the leaves into the gutter strategy too. It is a code violation to do so but who is enforcing it? So once this is eliminated how much will the sewer cleaning budget have to be increased? Code enforcement budget increase?

Another occasional tactic I have seen performed is to dump the yard waste onto park district property and let them sort it out.

How much money will be lost in landscaping sales taxes as people decide maybe they don’t need as much garden or as many trees, because they will have to pay even more in the Autumnal season?

  2. It’s not my tree. It just has grown here inside my property’s boundaries. Its leaves are its own. It is free, living thing.

  3. I live on freakin’ Wisteria Lane…. these people sweep the streets in front of their homes! AAAHH!!

  4. Charlie has a point because you cannot take down your own tree without city approval.

  5. Oh great. More unkempt lawns. More limbs left to rot where they fell. My neighbors given more incentive to throw yard waste into the wood behind our house, causing erosion and eradication of wildflowers. The ancient wisdom applies here: “Penny wise and pound foolish.” This council is clueless. Sandberg excluded.

Who among us will run next time?

  6. People people relax, Our beloved council charges us a garbage fee on our water bills of $6 and pays Illinois American Water over $88,000 a year to bill us for it. Now why the name of everything holy would Van Auken and the rest of the usual dweebs in charge vote to charge us more for garbage collection? Why don’t they just show up at my door and pee on my leg?

  7. aren’t we paying for it already? it’s included in the contract. Service has already decreased while property taxes remain fixed.

  8. This is another nail in Peoria’s coffin. Another fee, more yards a mess, less people wanting move to our town, tax base erodes further, more fees to compensate, less services, less people moving to our town. The downward spiral continues.

  9. Ottawa is currently doing the “pay-as-you-go” strategy, and everything that is mentioned above is happening in Ottawa. People are discouraged from cleaning their lawns, and in return, you see many, many yards that are eye-sores. I don’t want this for Peoria. It’s not worth the $1M savings in the long run.

  10. Mulch your grass clippings in-between the “free” pick-ups. Start a compost bin. Look at the definition of landscape waste and realize that it’s more narrow than you probably think, and if it doesn’t meet that definition it can go in with your trash. Help the environment and the City at the same time. Use your brain for something besides knee-jerk commenting. Have a wonderful day.
