  3. Africa doesn’t celebrate Kwanzaa… it was made up by a guy at Berkeley in the 1960’s. My daughter lived in West Africa for over two years, they celebrated Christmas. Also, my son went to school with Elton Selebi, whose father was Ambassador for South Africa at the time (Jackie Selebi), and we were invited to their home on many occasions, even met Nelson Mandela there. None of them had ever heard of Kwanzaa; they celebrated Christmas. That was 10 years ago, so Mandela has probably heard of it by now.

Though its roots lie in African heritage, it isn’t an African holiday. I have read about it and it sounds like a beautiful holiday to celebrate, however.

  4. I blame Bush.

No seriously, this is what’s going on:

I started Blog Peoria back back when the open-source blogging software Word Press MU (Multiuser) was still a “release candidate,” not a final version. I didn’t perform any kind of upgrade until version 2.3 was out. The reason I was this was because I was ADVISED to not upgrade. If it wasn’t broke, don’t fix it. Well, as time went by, it got harder and harder to get support for the problems that would occasionally pop up. It was like calling tech support for a Windows 3.0 computer in a Windows Xp world.

    So I upgraded. Oy.

But it worked. Kinda. There were lots of glitches, but it worked. Sorta. In fact, there were lots of new features in WPMu that wouldn’t work because of serious database issues. Some remain unresolved, and probably are to blame for the strain my site puts on servers.

Because of the server load issues, BP was kicked out of two other sites … Affordable Host and A Small Orange. I wound up at mediatemple. They never kicked me out, just charged me out the wazoo for CpU overages. In fact their last monthly bill was for $120; Plus, they were having service issues completely unrelated to my site.

So early last week, I moved to WiredTree, on one of their managed Virtual Private Servers. The site move went well, except for the fact that pictures that were uploaded to posts would not show up.

I worked with them to resolve the issue. Well, I tried. The answers I got often made no sense. They had problems answering specific questions that required specific answers. The seco0nd time this happened, I decided to move. I’d been in two arguments with tech support and I had hired them just three days earier.

I accepted an offer was a member of the WordPress community — who is himself involved in citizen journalism — to move BlogPeoria to HIS dedicated server.

Essentially, all the files and databases have been moved over. But his ISP has not yet recognized the nameserver switch, which is stopping him from troublesooting, since his browser is landing at the wrong server.

We communicated by phone less than one hour ago and he is on the right track toward getting this fixed. We are communicating with the WPMU forums and with developers.

All will be well soon. And the site will no doubt load faster.

Remember, ALL posts and ALL uploaded files are safe. NOTHING has been lost.

And thanks for your patience and concern.

  5. ImaSwede,
Are to you trying to pop my Christmas bubble? Anyway, I am sending you and my sister a Kwanzaa card.
