Midwest Generation cited by EPA for releasing too much soot

CNN reports that Illinois power plants are creating too much air pollution:

In documents released Monday, the EPA cites Midwest Generation for releasing too much microscopic air pollution. And the agency alleges that the company has continued to operate its aging power plants without adding pollution controls required by the Clean Air Act.

Midwest Generation, a unit of Edison International (EIX), owns two coal plants in Chicago, two in Will County, one outside Peoria and one in Waukegan. All of the plants were once owned by ComEd, which also has been cited by the EPA.

Hmmm… I predict energy prices are going to go up again, this time to fix aging infrastructure.

  1. No offense to our “poor” and “strapped for cash” energy companies in Central Illinois…but….uh…as a part of doing smart business…ah…maybe I am stupid…but ah….isn’t a company suppose to take profits and imporve/expand infrastructure before they get this bad (if they indeed are as bad and polluting as CNN says they are)????

    Just a thought…are they being mis-managed?

  2. Duck Creek was down for only a few months for upgrades – in fact they received a coal train today as they do about twice a week. Check your facts Randy.

  3. Randy, anti-pundit, you know me from years back (EI at the PPO). Duck Creek receives about 2 trains of coal (about 90 cars per train) every week for the past several months since the several month repair/upgrade hiatus at the start of 2007. Now what do you suspose AMEREN is doing with all that coal? If it is not being burnt to generate electricity then AMEREN might be wasting money on coal stockpiles they do not currently need. If this is the case then perhaps an investigative blogger (anti-pundit) should investigate and expose this possible AMEREN waste. By the way Randy, was that you I saw driving down Creek Road Tuesday at 11:15 or so?
