Peoria County Board vindicated in PDC expansion denial

From the Journal Star’s breaking news feed:

With no discussion, the Illinois Pollution Control Board voted 4-0 today to reject an appeal filed by Peoria Disposal Co.

Congratulations to the County Board and all the activists who worked to oppose this landfill expansion. Here’s a press release from Peoria Families Against Toxic Waste:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. Please announce the following:

PEORIA FAMILIES AGAINST TOXIC WASTE & HEART OF ILLINOIS SIERRA CLUB CELEBRATE ILLINOIS POLLUTION CONTROL BOARD DECISION SUPPORTING COUNTY BOARD DECISION OF MAY 2006

Peoria Families Against Toxic Waste (PFATW) and Heart of Illinois Sierra Club (HOISC) are very pleased to learn of today’s decision by the Illinois Pollution Control Board (IPCB).

Peoria Disposal Company (PDC) appealed last year to the IPCB when the Peoria County Board rejected their application to expand the hazardous waste landfill at the edge of the City of Peoria. Today, the IPCB ruled to uphold the decision of the County Board — again rejecting the possibility of expansion for PDC’s #1 landfill on Southport Road.

PFATW and HOISC are not surprised by the IPCB ruling, but we are most relieved to have state support for the County Board’s decision and their right to governing authority in this issue.

We don’t anticipate that this issue is fully resolved yet, given the still pending permit renewal in front of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, but we are reinvigorated and poised to carry on with this issue in whatever way necessary going forward from today.

Background on our groups

Heart of Illinois Group Sierra Club is a local volunteer group affiliated with the Illinois Chapter Sierra Club and the national Sierra Club. Sierra Clubs goal is to protect the environment, for our families and for our future.

PFATW is an ever-growing group of mainstream citizens who live and work in Peoria County and are concerned about the health and safety of our families. Like many other local grassroots organizations, the medical community and thousands of Peoria County citizens who voiced their strong concerns during the 2006 expansion hearings, we are gravely concerned about Peoria Disposal Company’s (PDC) proposed expansion of its hazardous waste landfill so close to our homes as well as the new threat of toxic PCBs. We are compelled and unified by a common sense of concern. We seek to do what we see as our duty as concerned residents to inform our neighbors and impact the public process. We are citizens, taxpayers, parents and grandparents and we seek to protect our health and the safety of our entire community.

  1. This is great news.

I have to note, however, that I have been a bit put off by the PFATW group. I have donated to this organization, but have never been told when and where it meets. I think they have tried to be quite insular, all the while seeking public donations. If you seek donations, you should announce your meetings and seek input from those who offer financial support. The compromise they proposed was ridiculous and would not have been suggested, I believe, if they had accepted more members. I do not believe it represented the will of most people who oppose expansion of the site.

NO MORE TOXIC WASTE. GET RID OF WHAT WE HAVE NOW. This should be a Superfund site if ever there was one. EN
