Piano teachers may be permitted to forego permit

Tonight’s council meeting includes an item to allow piano teachers (and other music instructors) to work out of their homes without having to pay $90 for a home occupation permit, but they can’t have more than four students at their house at the same time, and they can’t amplify their equipment.  Other home businesses that are not required to have a permit:  “computer operation,  . . . sewing machine operation, telephone operation, typing, and writing.” I could think of a few other occupations that shouldn’t require a permit, but at least they’re finally exempting musical instruction.  I hope this passes unanimously.

  1. “Build it and they will come”- exceptions are becoming the rule-enforce the home business ordinance strictly or you will have no need for one; some people do not want car after car coming into their quiet neighborhood, fast food remnants thrown all over their streets,etc.-there is a time and place for everything.

  2. this “home occupation permit” is just another power – and money – grab. We don’t need it. Period. If there really is a problem with what’s going on, the City can always declare it a nuisance and shut it down, ala the Grandview Hotel (a legal, properly zoned, buisness that some muckity-muck just didn’t like). Too bad we can’t declare some politicians and government projects nuisances and shut them down.

  3. Having people working in their homes… or having a workshop as part of their home, is in keeping with New Urbanism.
