They’ve got a point

District 150 teachers have given notice they may strike as early as Dec. 12. Why? The Journal Star reports:

The sticking point is pay. The district has proposed a “hard” wage freeze for the first year of a multiple-year contract, meaning there would be no raise to the base pay and no pay increases for gains in experience or education. The union, however, is proposing a soft freeze, which means there would be pay increases for experience and education but no raise to the base pay.

This is the same district that is planning on giving two administrators each roughly a $30,000/yr. raise. How is it that they can afford to give exorbitant raises to administrators but are destitute to give teachers a raise even when they gain experience and education? The district can’t have it both ways.

  1. Uh, CJ, did you read the quote you posted? It says there *would be* pay increases for experience and education but no raise to the base pay.

Mind you, I’d be fine if the district went bankrupt and shut down. :0)

  2. Hi James — Yes, I did read the quote. What you’re talking about is the “soft” wage freeze proposed by the union. The district wants a “hard” wage freeze, which means if the district gets its way, it *would not* give pay increases for experience and education the first year of the contract. However, during that same year, the district would give its “Associate Superintendents” each a $30,000 salary increase.

  3. governments always have money for what they want to have it for and give us the “no money” line for things they don’t want to have it for. It’s all about how THEY want to spend OUR money. They don’t give a flying frog what the taxpayers think. And how many Peorians let those legislators know how they felt about being screwed on the override vote??

  4. The article goes on to say the administration took a pay freeze last year while the teachers got an increase. They’re just asking the teacher’s to do the same this year.
