WCBU debate online

If you missed the 18th Congressional District candidates’ foreign policy debate last night, you can hear it online. WCBU has an mp3 of the entire debate on their site. By the way, Schock did end up attending. Kudos to him for not chickening out. The other candidates are former city councilman John Morris and Heartland Partnership CEO Jim McConoughey.

Too bad there’s no Democratic candidate in the primary. It would have made the debate a lot more interesting.

  1. Shock needs to step forward when attacked. He needs to defend rather than apologize. Does anyone really believe that the Communists in charge in China want any of our military prescense in the Far East? If it wasn’t for this prescense Taiwan would now be part of China.

Look how they are ruining Hong Kong. As a past visitor, I have no desire to vist today. Nor any desire to re-vist China, Olympics or none.

Show some balls Aaron. This is your race to lose.

  2. You’re right Merle, but the Chinese are not going to stop at Taiwan. Heck, they’ve already taken over the Panama Canal. And we continue to buy their poisoned junk. It’s cheap. If Hitler had started making toys and radios at Auschwitz for export to America at rock bottom prices, most of us would be speaking German (and rest of us would be dead).

  3. I just don’t get the fascination with Schock. He is 26 YEARS OLD. He has shown time and again during this campaign that he is not ready for Washington. The nukes to Taiwan is a SIGNIFICANT error that can’t be and should not be overlooked. He lost my vote with that. He and his campaign manager backed it up after it was said. Now he is saying at least it was a new idea to look at and we need fresh thinking in Washington?!? What?! Just because something is a new or fresh idea doesn’t mean it is a good one and this one was unequivocally a rotten idea. This along with a bunch of other stuff in his campaign is very distressing. I don’t know how you can say you are 100% pro life/ pro family and be a Giuliani supporter? Rudy is pro choice and pro gay marriage. Aaron is wrong for our district.

I like Morris and McConoughey much more. People, please go to their websites and research the candidates and their positions. I have not decide yet who it will be between Morris and McConoghey, but it will not be Schock. Just like I have not decided who it will be between the Republican candidates for President, but I know it will not be Giuliani.

Winning election as a Republican in a long-time Democratic district might have something to do with it.

I’m probably not going to vote for Schock in the primary, but can’t yet decide between Morris (whom I’ve actually met) and McConoughey.

I’m leaning McConoughey, though, as I like his economic development background, though the EDC’s endorsement of the “tear-the-rail-out-to-build-the-trail” is frustratingly shallow.

  5. I’m not voting for McConaughey. He is in bed with PDC and supported expanding the toxic dump over our aquifier. He appointed the head of the Peoria Disposal to the Chamber. He was wrong on the issue and the Sierra Club will beat him silly on that if he wins the primary.

  6. David:

To what statement are you referring to when you said “EDC’s endorsement of the tear-the-rail-out-to-build-the-trail”?

  7. On the Resolution put forth by Friends of the Rock Island Trail, approved by the Village of Peoria Heights but tabled by the Peoria City Council, it lists Friends of the Rock Island Trail Supporters. Among them: Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council for Central IL, Heart of Illinois Regional Port District and Peoria NEXT.

  8. Isn’t Schocks statement on Taiwan, consistent with Reagan administration policy in 1983 involving our allies in W. Europe and the Soviet nuclear threat? In that we are now in a cold war with the Chicom military industrial complex and Taiwan is our democratic government ally is you disagree with Schock then you have to mention his position within the context of Reagan anti-communist policy and its relatively recent history, which is now thought of as having been successful.

Accordingly the Schock position is “text-book” analysis copied from Ronald Reagan.

I understand that people disagreed with Reagan at the time and that they can disagree with Schock now but the way they are characterizing the position as inexperience when it is in fact based upon recent history…….sounds to me like some people need to review history a little before they bash Schock.
