Answer: The St. Louis Cardinals
Yep. They’ve been tied for first place with the Los Angeles Dodgers for a while, but that changed Wednesday. The Cardinals completed a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday afternoon, and the Dodgers lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks the same evening. That puts the Cardinals (84-57) a game ahead of the Dodgers (83-58), and at the top of the overall National League standings. And, I might just mention, they’re 11.5 games ahead of their nearest Central Division rival, the Chicago Cubs.
Also, the Cardinals’ magic number for clinching the Central Division title is now 12. GO CARDS!

Or you could say that there are two teams in baseball with better records than the Cards (Yankees and Angels).
The problem is that you’re still stuck cheering for the Cardinals.
How is watching a bunch of super rich steroid loaded “celebrities” play a kids game …
nevermind.
Did you hear the Cowboys raised their single game ticket prices to over $150?
kcdad,
They didn’t raise the price to watch the game at home, or force you to watch the game.
How is that free TV? You getting that broadcast for free over the airwaves? MY free TV broadcasts cost me $45 a month, and a digital TV. I am sure the advertising isn’t getting inside your head at all either…
(I don’t watch the game.) I was merely pointing out a fact.
I prefer watching high school football & basketball and little league baseball. You know, people who actually play for the love of the game. People who don’t need “incentives”.
Jon — The Cardinals have actually won two more games than the Angels…. Unfortunately, they’ve also lost two more games. So the Angels are only ahead because of the disparity in number of games played. The Yankees, however, are way ahead of everyone. But the Cardinals are trying to catch them, too. 🙂
kcdad — Must you be the pooper of every party? 😉 I enjoy watching baseball, despite its flaws. The world is flawed. Even little league can be overtaken by hyper-competitive parents (and kids). I don’t go to many major league games because of the high cost of tickets. But I do watch on TV and listen on the radio for free (and yes, I do watch/listen over the air). And yes there are commercials — but where aren’t there commercials? I have to listen to Sherman’s ads on WCBU and that’s public radio! That’s the way it is. I choose to enjoy life.
“So the Angels are only ahead because of the disparity in number of games played”. That argument is usually more effective when the team you’re trying to catch has played MORE games than you, not LESS 🙂
Jon — Normally I wouldn’t care, but my dad’s an Angels fan, so I have to remind everyone that the Cardinals have won two more games than the Angels.
But in the end, it doesn’t really matter. The important thing is that the Cardinals are most likely going to go to the post season, and the Cubs are not. So all is right with the world.
Isn’t it just like a Cardinals fan to oppose worthy projects touted by our admirable civic leaders?
I too love listening to ballgames on the radio, but as a Cub fan at least I don’t have to suffer the likes of Mike Shannon & his wretched play-by-play.
The Cubs will win, we now know when, Tom Ricketts & the Cubbiez in 2010!!
Go Angels…go Angels…go Angels…go Angels! I have my Rally Monkey ready for the post season!
Didn’t know there were Angels fans in Peoria!! Our rally monkeys are ready, too! I grew up going to the big A and watching the Angels…had Chuck Finley and Wally Joyner posters on my walls…screamed my way through their world series games a few years ago (my dad and sis were at game 6). Now, if we could just beat the red sox in the post season! 🙂
Pay very close attention to this statement:
There. Are. No. Rally. Monkeys. IN BASEBALL!!!
If through some bizarre stroke of fate, the Angels play the Cards in the Series, I will actually find myself preferring a Cardinals victory because those stuffed monkeys are even more annoying.
JC- I grew up going to the Big A, Wally Joyner was my first baseball crush and I was at game 3 of the world series, and when the won the AL…When the Angels lost to the White Sox in 2005 I almost threw my tv out of the window! We need to have an Angels watching party for the post season.
Billy…behold the power of the Rally Monkey! Mine is an official Rally Monkey purchased at a World Series game!
I think you jinxed them CJ – Right after your boast – 2 losses for the Cards and 2 wins for the Dodgers – no more first place.
I hope you don’t write about how Albert should be MVP or Carp is the Cy Young – they’d probably get injured the next game 🙂
Jon — When you wash your car, it rains. When you celebrate how well your team has been playing, they start losing. It’s a fact of life.
I thought your dad was a Pirates fan? Has he jumped ship?
Steve J…. The “wretched Mike Shannon”? As a Cubs fan, I can’t think of anyone worse than Santo. And 2010 will not be a World Series winner for the Cubs.
I do have to say, John Rooney’s hatred of all things Cub is a little odd.
