In happier news….

Cardinals LogoBaseball season started again this week. That’s right — the boys of summer are back!

Whitey’s recently got new high-definition televisions, too. That will make watching the Cardinals go to the World Series this year all the better. Do you realize the last time the Cardinals won the World Series was 2006? That’s three years ago! It’s time to go back.

And hey, the All-Star Game is in St. Louis this year! Maybe this will be the year the National League wins and gets home-field advantage for the World Series.

  1. Yeah, CJ, your precious redbirds will assuredly ride all the way to the fall classic this year on the strength of their bullpen, as demonstrated in their home opener. Jason Isringhausen has established a fine tradition which the cardinals can uphold through the ’09 season, at least in the minds of us Cub fans.
Seems to me that after yesterday’s referendum, you’re not looking too good when it comes to picking winners. But at least I now know 2 things we don’t see eye to eye on.

  2. I wonder if I will get a return on my investment with the Vonachen Chiefs this year? Been a long time coming!

  3. Steve J — Politics and baseball are two different things. Based on 10 World Series championships — the most recent being in 2006 — I’d say I’ve done a much better job at picking a winner than you have, Mr. Cubs Fan. 🙂

  4. I’m sorry I am such a miserable human being…

I used to be a huge baseball fan… knew everyone’s average, speed from home to first… all that stuff…

Then I grew up and realized that it is all a show, not much different from WWF… why do you guys still obsess about sports? It certainly isn’t the “love of the game”, it isn’t the excellence of the role models, it isn’t thrill of competition… you can get all that at your local high school, Little League or Sunday Morning League.

I am not talking about Football. I know why we all love to see two adult males smash into each other and break their legs, backs or necks… we all love to see the glazed look into a steroid driven illiterate college graduate or a quarterback with his 12th concussion trying to tell the interviewer which team he is playing for this year…that’s different.

What is it about professional baseball? Cards, Cubs… really.

  5. The only way the Cards make it to the World Series this year CJ is IF they can get past the Cub!

  6. That’s what I am talking about… thanks Ben!
It is a pissing contest… my team vs your team… only I have no interest in my team or your team or anything about the game except in my own imagination.

  7. C.J., Tell me what is it about Professional Baseball that is to like? (Ok… sitting in the stands with a dog and a beer, while the players are warming up and the crew is watering the infield is pretty cool… the stadium is a temple, like the character in Bull Durham says) You can do that almost anywhere… including Detweiller Park.

  8. kcdad- you are right, you are a miserable human being-ha! Ever try to hit a ball coming at you at 95 mph or catch a ball hit at 120 mph? Try that on for size and you will apppreciate the game of baseball. Comparing it to WWF is ridiculous.

  9. kcdad — As with any sporting event, what is to like is the competition, by both the players and the managers. It’s a game of strategy as well as performance. And it’s okay if you don’t like it. I’m just beginning to wonder what in the world you do like.

  10. wacko: not without steroids… but I did hit .620 in Pony League and was a All Star catcher in Little League.

That isn’t the point… if it is the speed of the ball, why not go for Tennis? (How about 125 mile per hour? Or Jai Alai?) If it is competition why put up with steroid use and the acceptance that some teams can spend more money on “top” players… like The Yankees? If it is strategy, then why not just watch kids play? The idol worship of Professional athletes is ridiculous. … for example: Alex Rodriguez

The point is why encourage this multi-billion dollar exploitation of our youth? Only 1/10th of 1% of kids get to play for the big bucks of professional sports… which causes many to do unethical, dangerous things to try and become that 1/10th of 1%.

Cheating, falsifying grades, wasted scholarships, drugs… these are some of the by products of professional sports. Can you suggest any GOOD by products?

As to what I do like? I LOVE my daughter, my students, my family… I love my friends, and nature. I love knowledge and wisdom. I love nearly every person I encounter in my everyday experience of this thing I love most… LIFE. (I don’t mean my life… I love LIFE… existence… being… all of it)

  11. kcdad sez: “It is a pissing contest… ”

I sez: Much like any conversation with you turns into?

You are having a “pissing contest” about other people’s “pissing contests”.

You know, I don’t like Wrasslin. But I am not going to try to convince a bunch of WWE fans they are stupid for talking about it because it would be a waste of my time.

    Go Cubs!

  12. When there is so much more to life… why wouldn’t you try and get them to see what a waste of their life wrestling and other professional sports are? The money, the corruption, the the money, the advertising, the money, the association with alcohol, drugs, gambling, the money… the violence… come on… let’s try and help each other rather than encourage each other to be “fanatics” about this phony hero worship.

Just ask yourself… what do YOU get out of it? If you honestly answer that question, I think you will agree with me. It is as escapist as daytime soap operas and heroin.

  13. kcdad sez: “The money, the corruption, the the money, the advertising, the money, the association with alcohol, drugs, gambling, the money… the violence”

I sez: You just described our society aas a whole. I think sports is a microcsm of real life. Withing that, both the good and bad, I have endless teaching examples for my children. Life is about learning to win and lose with grace. Sports is just a teaching tool – a fun one.
